Conceal Reveal

Drawings

I evolved and changed my approach to my work by creating large scale watercolour drawings, these are figurative pieces of cloaked figures. They are very minimal but very effective. Characteristics such as gender, age and race are removed making the figures more mysterious but also more relatable as they are open to interpretation.

My work mainly evolved from a set of monoprints I created of a cloaked figure. I was focusing on the idea of the cloak as a garment of concealment and a representation of how we create second skins to conceal and protect.

Berlinde de Bruyckere

The blanket acts not only a covering or a protection, but has become almost like a second skin, not only as a result of its constriction, but also because of its colour: it restricts the freedom of the body. The bodies are even distorted: arms, eyes or toes are left out, there are holes in the legs. This is De Bruyckere's view of humans: an erosion of humanness.
The figures in her drawing look detached and abstract like they are dissolving.

CONCEAL REVEAL, REVEAL CONCEAL

As we go through life our identity can go into hiding as we are constantly building and constructing new skins and layers. We cover ourselves up in masks, veils, cloaks, shrouds and layers of pattern until our features become impressions. For my project this year I have been exploring the concept of concealment and revelation and its connection to identity.

and another

Here is another one of my digital images which is a combination of scanned images and digital illustration. I decided to work with layers to convey the idea of adding, building and adding layers to our identity.
